Virginia Scottish Games and Festival

Pre-registration is highly recommended

I try to catch this festival every Labor Day Weekend. My first time, the festival started off with a dude jumping out of an airplane and landing on the field exactly at noon. And then there was a tattoo of kilted bagpipe players and a parade of clans. You can’t make this stuff up, people!

The formal games begin soon after the pomp subsides. I’m talking about big burly men tossing cabers while you guzzle beers and munch haggis. If you have a more sensitive palate, you can enjoy violin music in one of the tented stages.

Although this is a great place to throw down with your mates, the festival organizers work hard to keep it kid-friendly. I was particularly impressed with the mini-games held for the under 12 set last year. We didn’t have to register my little man in advance, and he had a great time.
