Just show up! You don't need tickets.

A little over 2 hours south of DC is the land of the Chickahominy Indian. These are the descendants of the people who helped the Jamestown settlers survive their first winter.

Now a federally recognized tribe, the Chickahominy gather each year on land they purchased to celebrate their heritage. Although it is not strictly a reservation (early colonists took their land and they were never granted a reservation), the grounds certainly feel like an independent nation.

Thousands of visitors come to witness the crowning of Miss Chickahominy and to experience the singing, dancing and drumming of this special event (details here).  Gates open Saturday 10am-6pm, Grand Entry at Noon.  Gates open Sunday 11am-5pm, Grand Entry at 1 pm

With plenty of space for the kids to spread out and heaps of delicious fry bread, it is also a family-friendly event. My son was mesmerized by the dancers and, when they took a break, he had a fine time just rolling in the hay!
